I also read the New England Journal of Medicine article (March 30th vol
332,13). It is important to note the mother was HIV+ but had no symptoms
of AIDS yet. The authors suggest that the mother contracted HIV-1 sexually
during pregnancy.
The authors compared some of the viruses in the infant to the ones in the
mother as well as checking human genetic markers to ascertain that the
child they tested was most likely related to the mother. The report is
credible and provocative.
