agarose gels

I know this is obvious, and you have probably checked...
but are your gels a constant thickness, ie oured on a
level surface in all 3 dimensions. Other effects could be excess 
salt in some samples, finally (grabbing at straws) could the platinum
wires be broken close to one side of the chamber??
