NSF SCIENCE EDUCATION FUNDING TO BE CUT

As part of the reinventing government initiative for the National Science
Foundation (NSF), the Clinton administration will propose next month an 11
percent budget reduction together with staff cuts.

Internal to the agency, these reductions will fall heavily on the education
and human resources directorate. Nearly three-fourths of the reductions will
be directed at the NSF education efforts. The result would be a 37 percent
reduction in education funding. The present FY 95 budget is over $600
million. A reduction of more than $200 million would cut NSF education
funding for 1996 below FY 1992 levels.

These plans are not yet final but are expected to be announced in early May
when Congress returns. Similar budget reductions are expected from NASA,
DOE, NIH, and DOD education funding. Contact Gary Allen, Triangle Coalition,
