PLEA FROM EGYPT

Madison 13 Octobre 1993

Yesterday I received a letter from Egypt that I reproduce
below. It was typed and corrected on a clothe ribbon
type-writer meaning that they probably don't have even
word processing capabilities (?).
My answer was that I can help him with computer visualization
but I don't even know if they have access to computers, let
alone Macintoshes.
In my reply I also promised to put a note on the Internet
for them as I know that Egypt is connected only to
Bitnet.

Anyway, if you can help those people, even so a little it
probably would help them a LOT more than you think.

I retype here is the letter, addressed to me:

     Dear Dr. Sgro,

I read the announcement of your Teaching Virology to
Undergraduate students activity in ASV 1993 meeting. Egypt
is a country representing evolution of virus epidemics.
Teaching virology to undergraduate Medical Students in
Egypt is realy problematic. More often it is done as a "dry
course" leaving a lot to the imagination of the student, who
can go stray. We have very little means to show cell culture
infexted with polio, herpes, adeno viruses for cytopathic
changes; or show a hemagglutination reaction or an ELISA
plate. Therefore, I plea to our group to extent a helping
hand to us and did us in developing local teaching facilities
and or develope a prototype course program for both the
undergraduate and the post graduate clinicians refresher
courses. Our goal is rising student awareness of virus
diseases. Sincerely Yours

I know that the idea of creating a pool for a "core" course
outline for undergraduates (or graduates) already appeared
on this news-group but it did not come to a concrete solution.
This will may-be help some people not as fortunate as us
around the world.
So if someone has electronically or otherwise available
material that they can share I can transfer the information
or you can send it directly to the correspondance address
in EGYPT.
Thank you for them!

Jean-Yves Sgro

P.S. REMINDER: my anonymous ftp is still working well, there
are in general about 10 connections a day and no complains!!!
So I assume that this is useful.

P.P.S I am working on creating a video that I plan to finish for
ASV94 to be held here in Madison. But I'll post again about
that!
