I'm a ground-water geochemist who's just switched gears and has started a
new job with EPA. One of the things I'm doing in trying to rearrange my
thinking to working with a regulatory agency is to teach myself a little
toxicology. So far I've found this newsgroup, and the links in the FAQ,
as well as a toxicology tutorial from the National Library of Medicine
(http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/toxtutor.cfm).
One of the links on the bionet.toxicology FAQ is to something called
"Biological Effects of Low-Level Exposure" (BELLE), which has introduced
me to the provocative concepts of things like non-linear dose-response
curves, J and U shaped dose-response curves and hormesis. This stuff
could, it seems to me, change the way regulators might approach their
jobs, but from the tone of the stuff in the BELLE newsletters, some of
this is still pretty cutting edge, if not controversial. But I'm
interested in keeping an eye on the current research. The stuff at the
BELLE site is a year or more old. Are there any other places on the Web,
or certain journals where I can find stuff?
And don't worry, they're not expecting me to practice toxicology at
work, :-) they want my input on ground water stuff, but some of these
issues are closely related to whether or not we need to be worried about
the toxicity of a particular compound. Anayway, when we do talk toxic
effect, I'd like to at sound intelligent.
