Subject: Result of Coal Tar Shampoo Peer Review
Additional Peer Review of Assessment of Skin Cancer Risk from Use of Coal
Tar-Containing Shampoos
An expert peer review panel met by teleconference on July 26, 2000 to review
a revised document entitled "Estimation of Lifetime Skin Cancer Risk from
the Use of Coal Tar-Containing Shampoos." This document was prepared by the
K.S. Crump Group of ICF Consulting for Whitehall-Robins Healthcare, a
subsidiary of American Home Products.
The peer review panel was made up of independent scientists from industry,
government, consulting, and academia. The panel discussed revisions made to
the document as a result of the panel's recommendations and comments at the
first meeting in June 2000 (http://www.tera.org/peer ). In general the
panel agreed with the authors' revisions and offered additional suggestions
for further clarification and strengthening of the text. A summary of the
panel's discussions and recommendations will be available at this website by
late August 2000.
This independent peer review is organized by TERA; a non-profit corporation
dedicated to the best use of toxicity data for risk assessment. For more
