The 4th Algal Bloom Detection Monitoring And Prediction (ABDMAP) - workshop.
A European wide concerted action, funded under the Environment and Climate
Programme of the European Commission´s framework programme IV.
June 4-5, 1998. Arranged by the Department of Physical Geography at Stockholm
University, Sweden
Background
Recent observations suggest an increasing frequency of algal blooms in coastal
waters, many of them even toxic. The effects are noticed on the environment,
marine life and health.
An earlier study programme called OCTOPUS, undertaken for the European
Commission, investigated operational uses of ocean colour data and recognised
the potential use of satellite based data to monitor algal blooms. ABDMAP, a
Concerted Action, was conceived partly in response to this study, to bring
together workers interested in the role of remote sensing (EO) data in the
detection, monitoring and prediction of coastal and marine algal blooms in
European waters.
During the project time a total of 7 workshops will be held across Europe. The
Stockholm workshop (being the 4th) has the overall theme:
Identification, Characterisation, Detection
