It is a byproduct of combustion of coal or any fraction of petroleum
products. It has a multi-ring structure, and is a known human
carcinogen. The following organizations have set exposure limits, both
industrial and environmental:
IARC
MEK
ACGIH (TLV/TWA)
ATSDR
US EPA
CAL EPA
EPA ranks this as the most potent member of the anthracenes, and
therefore ranks it with a potency of 1.0. All other potencies are
normalized to this.
