A postdoctoral position will soon be available in the lab of Dr Jerome
Giraudat, at the Institut des Sciences Vegetales, CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette,
France. (Gif-sur-Yvette is situated in the outskirts of Paris)
This position is part of a Research Training Network funded by the European
Union under the Fifth Framework Programme (FP5). Hence only non-French
nationals of a European Community Member State or an Associated State are
eligible.
Our Research Training Network assembles 11 European laboratories analysing
cross-talk and integration of stress signalling in plants (acronym CRISP). The
successful applicant will combine genetic and molecular approaches on
Arabidopsis to characterise abscisic acid (ABA) signalling and its degree of
crosstalk to other pathways.
Promotion of stomatal closure is one of the best documented ABA-dependent
responses to water stress. Furthermore, recent studies indicate that stomatal
guard cell is a promising system to combine genetic, molecular and biophysical
approaches for characterising ABA action. However, genetic dissection of
signal transduction pathways in guard cells has been rather limited, at least
in part because of the difficulty in identifying a reliable phenotype for
mutant screening. Stomatal opening results in a rapid cooling of the leaf
surface that can be measured non destructively using infrared video
thermography. We defined experimental conditions under which infrared video
thermography can be reliably and conveniently used to identify individual
Arabidopsis plants with altered stomatal responses. These conditions permitted
us to isolate mutants that appear to be selectively affected in ABA
responsiveness in guard cells (Mustilli et al., 11th International Conference
on Arabidopsis Research, Madison, Wisconsin, 24-28 June, 2000). The successful
applicant will participate in the characterisation of this novel class of
mutants and of the corresponding genes.
