looking for info about communicative energy by plants

I'm looking for more specific information about the invisible
intelligent communicative energy by plants. Plants seem to follow the
movements of animals and us (humans) on a cell-level.
In the book 'THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS' by Peter Tompkins and
Christopher Bird (NY Harper & Row '73) a discription of some tests is
given. This is one of them: a galvanometre is connected to a plant.
Someone threatens to burn the plant with a match and the galvanometre
strikes out wild. I would very much like to find out wheather this is
believable or not.
So if any of you could help me out, I'd be very grateful.
