Dear Photosynthetikers :

Each year, I send some message (late in December) to friends and colleagues
who are doing research in photosynthesis, or, read the News on this Net.
My message is simple this year: I wish you all a Happy New Year, and I also
wish you all to make great discoveries in whatever area you are working on
this year , and, have some fun in Science.

Personally, I was very pleased to see two books in print in the "Advances
in Photosynthesis Series" in 1998:
[1] Lipids in Photosynthesis: Structure, Function and Genetics, Vol. 6,
Edited by Paul-Andre Siegenthaler and Norio Murata.
ISBN 0-7923-5173-8, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
[2] The Molecular Biology of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria in
Chlamydomonas, Vol.7, Edited by Jean-David Rochaix, Michel
Goldschmidt-Clermont and Sabeeha Merchant. ISBN 0-7923-5174-6, Kluwer
Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
I hope you will make sure that your library orders them (if not already
done) because they are great books for research as well as for teaching.

I am further pleased to announce that the following two books in the
"Advances in Photosynthesis Series" are in press at the moment:
[1] The Photochemistry of Carotenoids: Applications in Biology, Edited by
Harry A. Frank, A.J. Young, G. Britton and Richard J. Cogdell. There will
be 20 chapters in this book.
[2} Photosynthesis: Physiology and Metabolism, Edited by R.C. Leegood, T.D.
Sharkey and S. von Caemmerer. There will be 25 chapters in this book.
If you wish to know more about these books, please write to me in May, 1999
by E-mail: gov at uiuc.edu. They will be printed in 1999.

Finally, I want to thank all of you who wrote nice E-mails, or letters,
while I was recovering from my sinful open-heart surgery ( a quadruple

With best wishes to you all,

At your service again,
