Could you specify?
Licor has several devices that measure sihouette-areas of
single leaves etc. And LAI-2000 device estimates leaf area index
for a canopy.

To talk about measuring silhouettes of eg. leaves,
the most accurate system we know is high resolution
digital camera plus computer running appropriate software.
(interested about the software? email me...)
Digital camera + good software is _flexible_.
Video-cameras don't have (as far as I know) as good resolution.
(but I still used one 2 years ago...)

If you measure rather big objects (like > 1 cm2) the resolution
won't be a big problem, but we've worked mostly with needles
and this needs a good resolution. :-)
