I agree emphatically with Mr. Feener.  Without getting into a lot of technical
mumbo-jumbo, your best bets are boiling or a commercial backpacking
ceramic-type filter.  Drawbacks:  Boiling is inconvenient, gobbles up precious
backpacking stove fuel and gives water a flat taste. However, it was
appropriate, for example, in Milwaukee when that city had a huge
cryptosporidium outbreak in 1993 (people could conveniently boil water on the
stove at home).  Filters are the way to go for hikers--they're light, use no
fuel and aren't terribly expensive when you look at lifetime costs.
