We anticipate receiving funding in Jan, 1998-Jan 2000 to examine
environmental factors that influence amphibian community structure and
health as indicators of ecosystem integrity. One facet of the study is
to examine green, cricket and leopard frogs from 30 different sites (MN,
WI, IL) and catalogue the helminth and hematozoan communities. The
sites will be characterized by one set of researchers as to land use
(agric/mixed to urban)followed by biotic and abiotic profiles.
Different sites will be compared as to parasite communities present and
potential health impact.
Students interested should have a solid classical training in animal
parasitology with interest/experience in parasite ecology,
ability/experience identifying adult and larval helminths, some
statistics training and interest in disease. Student will have to be
able to work independently. The project will have a full time
technician. The degree will be awarded from the U of IL at Urbana from
the Pathobiology dept. with the work being done at the National Wildlife
Health Ctr in Madison, WI. If interested please email me and I can give
you more information or write: Dr. Rebecca Cole, NWHC, 6006 Schroeder
Rd, Madison, WI 53711. email Rebecca_Cole at nbs.gov
