There is a new class of antimalarial drugs called artemisinin
derivatives which are currently in development. Some are commercially
available in certain countries (i.e., artesunate in Thailand, artemisinin
in Vietnam, and several different derivatives in China). I've heard
that they will be licensed in Europe soon. However, they can only be
used for therapy, not prophylaxis, and may possibly have side effects.
Your husband should take the more classical antimalarial drugs
like mefloquine or Fansidar.
There is a new vaccine that is being evaluated - Spf66. The
results of the recent WHO-monitored Tanzania trial are due out in Lancet
any week now.
