I think this might be along the lines of what you are looking for. By Peter
Jonas's group: Fast synaptic inhibition promotes synchronized gamma
oscillations in hippocampal interneuron

As well as this one from Buzsaki's group: Gamma frequency oscillation in the
hippocampus: intracellular analysis in vivo. Not quite necortex, but that
should help.
