Do you honestly think that this is the kind of question that can be definitively
answered? It is the case that we are conscious. We are machines (of sorts). So
yes. But if the question is "can an artifact be conscious" the answer is "who
knows!"
The question concerns 'variable realizability' i.e., if consciousness is an
'emergent property' of electrochemical dynamics and processess, that is, if
consciousness is instantiated by the wetwear of the brain, then perhaps it can
be instantiated by a 'functionally isomorphic' machine (artifact).
So, does the brain 'cause' consciousness? what is it about the brain that is
special that it causes consciousness? etc.,. there are no answeres, only
questions.
