The gate count in a 1975 computer was 1/500th of what a single simple
semiconductor chip can include today. Not even counting that the memory
available to a $300 PC today is 28,000 TIMES as much as the memory available
to most 1975 mainframes, this improved gate count alone enables much more
complex transactions to be processed on today's PCs than were processed on
Crays.
