Well, d'uh.
Back in the Old Days, we used to refer to that as a "wombat". You
back John into a corner, no easy thing, and he'll suddenly shriek
loudly and change the subject, drenching the whole in ad-hominems.
The "wombat" came from the image of John, trapped, suddenly screaming
"LOOK! A WOMBAT!".
