When will people stop this nonsense? There is nothing mysterious about
either of the uses of "consciousness," which refers either to "responding"
(or "responding to stimuli") and "responding to ones own behavior or states
of one's body" (i.e., "self-awareness"). To be "aware of one's self" is
simply to respond discriminatively to one's own behavior or states of one's
body. The discriminative control is established, at least at the level of
the individual, via the same processes as discrimination of other aspects of
the world. Indeed, the procedure known as "drug-discrimination" establishes
such discriminative control in non-human subjects. As far as the "way the
brain works during self-awareness," no one knows, since no one really has
any idea how simple operant behavior is "controlled by the brain." But lets
see the problem of "consciousness" for what it is.
