No, not really. Mind.Forth in its infancy is about as useful
as a human baby -- can't do much, but has potential.
It also depends upon what you mean by "useful." The responses
that Mind.Forth gives are useful in seeing how the AI operates,
and in seeing what work remains to be done, but will not psycho-
analyze you and set your life straight, the way Eliza does so well.
However, Eliza has a rather fixed repertoire of responses, whereas
with Mind.Forth you build up a knowledge base (KB) of potential
robot wisdom (attn: Jorn Barger) by entering in fact after fact --
kind of like what the human data-droids of Cycorp do with the Cyc
ontology -- except that Mind.Forth is probably modeled much more
accurately after a neural mind than is the Cyc ontological KB.
BTW/BTU's of effort: I did go ahead and post a new Mind.Forth at
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/7256/mind4th.html on 1 Feb 2K.
Due to obsessive meme-sprawling of the URL, every day about forty
visitors at least look at Mind.Forth, coming from a range of domains
stretching from the most serious computer science sites in the world
down to those that take a more cavalier attitude towards AI and
http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~phoenix/vinge/vinge-sing.html the
Technological Singularity about which we all have fair warning.
[A very few of the serious-site visitors are coming back
repeatedly and must be taking substantial notes. I hope that
they have a "Steal this idea" attitude towards Mind.Forth
and spring a full-blown AI upon all of us before too long.]
So, "useful response" from Mind.Forth? The Forthmind is barely
verbal and has an IQ probably, if measurable, between 0 and 1.
Please excuse the bold signature file, which in comp.sys.super
so outraged the newsgroup honcho that he threatened to march
right over to Gates Hall and tell John "LISP" McCarthy about it.
