There is a slight problem. Once the brain is cut off from the body
it becomes rather difficult to find out whether it is thinking or not.
That is, you can ask it questions, but it tends not to answer back!
That plus the fact that doing this with a human might be considered
a tad unethical.
But, still, it is rather routine to isolate nervous tissue (including brain
slices) from experimental animals, keep it in a well balanced
physiological saline solution with appropriate nutrients and oxygen,
and keep it alive and functioning for some time.
