role of thalamus in intellectual development

...Once upon a time someone realized that a cat without a tail 
is still a cat without a tail 
even after finding out more about how tails of cats look like 
and what role the according structures tend to have.

Then the cat died and afterwards he wondered if the cat and himself
would not have had a more content life 
if he had not worried tht much about what is not 
and been more content with what is.
