I particularly recommend Braitenberg for that kind of question. I just
wanted to add that _6_ layers is fairly arbitrary, and that in the early
days, different schools suggested different numbers, from 3 to 7.
Additionally, in striate cortex, people stick to the 6 layer concept, and
then talk about layer 4(a) and 4(b) and some sublayers even come with their
alpha and beta and gamma subdivisions!
