Okay quick note here regarding PTC. The IDCM guidelines describe the
following categories to be meet inorder to be dignosed with PTC (a.k.a. BIH,
IIH, exogenous hydrocephalus, etc etc) one must have: 1. MRI must be within
normal limits (no lesions, masses, or tumors) 2. Spinal fluid greater then
200Hg/mm 3. Lab analysis of Spinal fluid must be within normal boundaries.
Now if we use the medical communities criteria to say PTC is the result of a
tumor caused by Nutrasweet is erronous and medically dangerous. To say that
possibly nutrasweet causes some vaxcular or immune problem that make help to
create PTC might be more within the correct medical realm of PTC related
causes.
Michelle and others who have been diagnosed with PTC there is NO tumor or
fluid sack associated with PTC. PTC is known as a "reactive disorder" where
for reasons known and unknown the spinal pressure in you head begins to
increase. Because of this increase in pressure headaches, tinnutis, Sixth
nerve palsy. papiledema and vision loss are possible. Current treatment
consist of diuretics (lasix, diamox, neptazane), steroids (prednisone in
short-term therapy), weight control using salt restrictive diets, ONSF
surgery to reduce vision damage and or LP/VP shunts if all else fails. Causes
of PTC have been linked to saggital sinus thrombosis, some acnes medications,
Mega doses of Vitamin A, menstral abnormalities, prednisone, lithium, head
trauma, blood clots, etc. There are also many case that are
idiopathic...unknown etiology at this moment. There are some excellent sites
on the web for information...some have been listed here as well as a few
excellent email list that will but you in touch with many others struggling
to make heads and tales of PTC. PatD PTC-Support-Group at Onelist
