Urban legend has it that dolphins require partial wakefulness to 
assure respiratory air intake (and thus don't take kindly to 
anaesthesia: they drown). They accomplish it by alternating 
wakefullness between hemispheres (wish we could do that trick). 
Alas, also no ref here...
