Mohanraj,
Are you talking about an undergraduate or graduate degree in
Neuroscience? If you are talking about getting a Ph.D. then you shoud
make sure you understand completely what you are getting into. If you
have a passion for the science and you have really investigated all of
your options then I think you should go for it. As for jobs, that is
a tricky matter. The national research council (NRC) has just
reported the results of a study that they did on the outlook for jobs
for new Ph.D.s in the biomedical sciences. Unfortunately the outlook
is not very good (Science 11 Sep 1998 Vol 281 pg. 1584). My boss, is
the immediate past president of the Association of Neuroscience
Departments and Programs (ANDP) and they just published the results of
their own survey which claims that the field of neuroscience is immune
from this current job famine and that new neuroscience Ph.D.s will
enjoy great prosperity in the next millenium. Bottom line is, no one
can garuntee you a job, but if you work hard and are dedicated and
make all of the right decisions (about who to work for, etc) then you
will succeed. Feel free to email me if you want to talk further.
