Dental injection & facial nerves? (Was: Re: Facial Nerve Damage)

Brian, I think what Joel was getting at was that the sterile water was
simply a placebo that also caused vaso-vagal syncope.  The "spaciness" that
these patients experienced was likely due to worrying about the needle!  I
typically get "spacey" after any shot that I get (except in the mouth)--I've
even passed out 10 minutes after a Hepatitis B vaccination.  I consider it a
psychogenic reaction--I remember sitting there worrying if the vaccine could
possibly give me Hepatitis B!  Same with flu shots and TB tests.  However,
when I get a local anesthetic, I am fine--probably because I'm more aware of
what it is, how it works, and how harmless it is.  Having said that, there
are rare side effects to mepivacaine that could explain those feelings.
However, lidocaine has no known side effects (other than if someone is
allergic to all amide-type anesthetics).
