Two Ph.D. scholarships are available in the Department of Psychology
at The University of Auckland for students interested in working on a
research project on the brain mechanisms of mental rotation. The
stipend is NZ$14,000 per annum for up to three years of study, and is
not taxable. Students will have the opportunity to earn additional
money through tutorships or research assistantships in the
Department. The scholarships do not cover tuition expenses.
The scholarships are funded as part of a Royal Society of New Zealand
Marsden Fund research grant to Dr. Blake Johnson and Prof. Michael
Corballis. The project will examine 128-channel event-related
potentials while subjects perform tasks involving mental rotation,
and we plan to use magnetic resonance images to locate the
sources of ERP activation.
Details of dissertation projects will be worked out between the selected
students and the project supervisors. We are looking for candidates with
the following combinations of interests and experience.
Scholarship 1. Candidates should have some background and interests in
cognitive psychology, electrophysiological techniques, experimental
design, and programming. Candidates need not have all of these skills
but should be interested in acquiring them.
Scholarship 2. Candidates should have some background and interests in
biomedical imaging, biophysical aspects of electroencephalography,
digital image processing, and programming. Candidates need not have all
of these skills but should be interested in acquiring them.
We encourage applications from overseas applicants and funds are
available for return air travel (but not relocation expenses).
Students who are not New Zealand citizens may have to pay overseas
tuition rates, although the University of Auckland has reciprocal
tuition agreements with Australia, Ireland, France, Germany, and the
University of California.
Scholarships are available beginning March 1, 1999.
