Ephaptic transmission refers to the transfer of information, usually
electrically, between elements which are very near each other but not in
direct, or synaptic, contact. This has been shown to occur between
experimentally damaged axons and is presumed to be a basis for
paresthesias in cases of nerve damage since electrical cross-talk between
normal nerve fibers does not occur.
