Has the specific role of dystrophin in the brain been determined? I've come
across material suggesting that the cognitive deficits sometimes found in
patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy may result from the low to absent
production of dystrophin inherent in the disease imparing areas of the brain
which use the protein. However, while common cognitive symptoms were
outlined, no explanation of dystrophin's role in the brain was given. Is it
related to cell maintenance, or neural connections, or perhaps
neurotransmitter production? Or has there simply not been enough research yet
to know?
