Not much is known profoundly about the physiology of fear, but
here is a neuroscientific proposal for the etiology of emotion:

In the Default Standard Model of the Mind as depicted above, we
see a dangerous-looking dog through our visual memory channel.

As the incoming image of a dog floods our visual memory channel,
the successful recognition of the incoming image (not as a whole
but as a widely disparate array of features as Nobel-Prize-ified
by Hubel and Wiesel ca. 1961 --> Stockholm 1981), causes the con-
cept or idea of "dog" to be activated in the semantic mind-core.

By spreading activation (q.v. alibi), the gang of neurons for
"dog" redeposits the remembered image of dog at the freshest ex-
tremity of the advancing front of consciousness; activates the
word "dog" or "chien" or "Hund" or "inu" or "sobaka" in auditory
memory according to what language you are musing in; and strikes
fear into our timid, cowering brain by activating a meta-network
of neurons tying in our rational mind-processes with our primitive
physiological responses to clear and present dangers: CAVE CANEM.
