It is not clear to me whether there were two scans or two
interpretations of the same scan. If two scans, some variiability
could be from change in head position from one scan to the next or
(more hopefully) an improvement in the patient's condition.
If two different people reading the same scan, what can I say? These
are human perceptual judgments. Even in the same hospital, readers may
have been trained in different places; but even if trained in the same
place, readers may differ.
Part of the difficulty may lie in the limits of CT scans, which are not
so good for fine-grain analysis of soft tissue as MRIs are. I forget
where you said the damage was, but (for example) edema may push basal
structures (bottom of temporal lobes, beginning of brainstem) into bony
areas at base of skull, and I believe CT is especially difficult when
soft tissues are surrounded by bony areas--not my area of expertise,
but believe this is so from what I've heard and read.
