I think we are talking about two
different things here.
Neurons (nerve cells) do not
regenerate,
once the body cell is damaged, it
inevitably degenerates, the cell
dies and
is never replaced.
However it is a well known fact
that
the myelin sheath of peripheral
nerve
cells can "sometimes" regenerate if
damaged.
The cause of multiple sclerosis is
unknown but it is believed to be an
autoimmune disorder in which the
body
defense system mistakes the
myelin
sheath as a foreign element and
attacks
it.
In other words, peripheral nerve
cells
can SOMETIMES regenerate, central
nerve cells DO NOT regenerate.
