Neurolinguistics and Neurolinguistic Programing (NLP)
I have, out of curiosity for the name, looked into this psuedoscience, and
there is much merit there as a learning-motivational technique, but it is
neither linguistic, not neurological. The fundamental premise seems to be
that of the few that are successful, it is not important to know why, only
that the techiniques be emulated. The methods of emulating the
'successful' constitute the substance of this field.
Many of the popular motivational programs are derivitives of nlp, Tony
Robbins comes to mind. Some of the foundations also come from hypnosis,
Erikson, for example, is often quoted. The founders of the field met with
great success and then seemed to disintegrate in one form of scandel,
disagreement or another, and what has happened to them, I do not know.
This is one of those poorly posed fields which, while anecdotally
sucessful, does not allow much substance for experimental verification, nor
does it seem to be solidly founded in well researched methods. Triumphs
are much quoted, but there is no counterbalancing records of experimantal
failures.
