This is a case report of a schizophrenic patient treated first with
clozapine then with olanzapine who reported to me something which I
have predicted many years ago as a theoretical possibility:decreasing
paranoid states with novel agents which I termed the "Sociabilisers".
The sociabilisers constitute a class of novel therapeuthical agents
comprising two sub-classes:
A.Tyrosine hydroxylase activators derived from Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate
B.Tryptophan hydroxylase inhibitors derived from MDMA(3,4
Methylenedioxymethamphetamine)
My hypothesis stated that sociable and paranoid states were different
expressions of a common underlying nervous structure.
It stated that activation of this structure would lead to paranoia
while inhibition would lead to sociable states(up to what we call
"love",etc).
One of a consequence of this hypothesis was that gamma-hydroxybutyrate
and MDMA may,possibly,be anti-paranoid agents.
Recently I got a report,as stated,which may confirm this:one patient
who was completely asocial,destructive and paranoid and labeled as a
tretament-resistant schizophrenic(he did not respond to conventional
neuroleptics or even to Risperidone)reported a dramatic change in his
personality with MDMA.
He reported to me that he discovered "love" wth MDMA and that it
helped a lot in changing his asocial behaviour.
What is more remarkable is that he reports "instant" suppression of
his paranoia while under MDMA.
This is in line with what I hypothesised.But what is more important is
that this case could open a new avenue of research in the
understanding and the treatment of paranoia.
If MDMA is indeed superior to clozapine or olanzapine in suppressing
paranoid states we could have here completely new ways of treating
this disorder.
