As mice and rats replace larger animals in biological research, measuring
their end-tidal CO2, also known as a capnometry, becomes very important
as it correlates with arterial pCO2 and depth of anesthesia. It is especially
important during artificial ventilation of anesthetized subjects. While measurements
of end-tidal CO2 and N2O were routinely used during anesthesia of humans and
larger animals, the same measurement in mice (or even rats) was impossible due to
limitations imposed by very small tidal volumes and high respiration frequencis. New
Micro-capnometer makes it possible to accuraely measure end-tidal CO2 in mice
because it requires only 5 ml/min. air sample flow which does not conflict with small
tidal volume of mouse. It accurately measures end-tidal CO2 with respiration
frequency of 130 breaths/min. and when air sample flow is increased to 20 ml/min,
the measuring frequency range increases to 250 breaths/min. Micro-capnometer can
also be used with any larger subject such as a rabbit, dog etc. Besides CO2 and N2O
Micro-capnometer also computes and displays respiration frequency. Analog outputs
make it possible to record %CO2 and %N2O waveforms on the chart recorder. Optional
RS-232 interface and software allows connection and display of CO2 and N2O
