In "Numerical Methods for Neuronal Modeling" (Koch and Segev, ed., Methods
in Neuronal Modeling, MIT Press, 1989), Michael Mascagni criticizes
compartmental modeling, stating: "it is my opinion that if one can convert
a compartmental model to an equivalent PDE model, this should be done to
obtain the benefits of the PDE methods." (p. 454) Having mucked around a
bit in this area, I understand his point--large compartmental models are
stiff. Despite this criticism, compartmental models appear to be alive and
well, and I see very few PDE models extant. Has anyone been working in
this area?
