The edge structures you mention are known here as
the nodal uncollapsed spirals (NUS) of the deflated sheet. I un-
derstand that the nomenclature is still unsettled. At the level
of consecutive spiral's coils, the extracellular milieu has no
barrier to diffuse into the not-virtual interstitium between su-
ccesive turns of the deflated cellular sheet.
I would consider capacitance measurements before
and after activation, done on explants or tissue cultures.
