Many variants of neurotransmitter receptors?

A recent NY Times article reported that a neuron can have
many variants of a receptor of a given neurotransmitter.
It was suggested in the article that each variant would
have a slightly different response to the neurotransmitter.
Depending on the details, this could make the task of modelling
biological neural networks very difficult. Have these effects
been quantified? How? Anyone have refs?
