Frequency tuning in the Cochlea

The common wisdom on the layout of the basilar membrane says that it
is logarithmically arranged in terms of `best' frequency. This appears to
be a good approximation, but it is likely not to be the case in reality.
I have heard it said that it is probably closer to linear at the low frequency
end, but without any substantiation.

Does anyone have any references on this topic (I have searched med70, med75,
med80 and the current medline without finding any support for this idea- at
least in the abstracts).

Thanx.
