Thanks for the references. Here's a paragraph from "Core Text of
Neuroanatomy, 4th edition" author Malcolm B. Carpenter, page 397.
Peptides identified mainly in the cerebral cortex include
cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and
neuropeptide Y (NPY). These peptides are found in superficial
layers close to capillaries and may control local metabolism and
blood flow. VIP is a potent vasodilator and NPY is a
vasoconstrictor. Somatostatin-like immunoreactivity in the cortex
is significantly reduced in Alzheimer's disease.
