We are planning a small number of experiments on kainic acid in rats to
compare the pathology with domoic acid. Our animal care committee will
not allow the induction of seizures in conscious animals yet the
literature we have seen indicates that use of barbiturates protects
against the excitotoxic effects of kainic acid.
Has anyone any suggestions as to increase in dose required to
overcome the protective effects of anaesthesia? We are using 10
mg/kg bw.
