I am an undergraduate student majoring in Neuroscience at
Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and I am planning on
doing research on vaso-vagal syncope. I would appreciate any
information that is currently available on the subject. I learned
about vaso-vagal syncope by a friend that suffers this condition.
She has seen several neurologists and cardiologists about her
condition, but no definate cause has been pinpointed. From her
examinations, the following observations have been made:
Normal EKG, EEG.
Relatively low blood pressure, blood sugar, and iron concentration.
Normal neurological signs.
When the syncope occurs, her blood pressure drops dramatically
and she loses conciousness for a period of time ranging from 1 to 20
minutes. She reports numbness starting in her abdomen and proceeding
to her limbs. She has undergone a stress test to induce the syncope
but she reported that the sensations were not the same. She is
planning to take a tilt table test to further determine the cause of
her condition. She is not currently taking any medicaitons, but some
have been considered including beta-blockers.
I have heard of many similar cases in young women ranging from their
mid-teens to mid-twenties. There has been surprisingly little
research done on this and I would sincerely appreciate any
information about where I could investigate this subject. I have
included her profile to narrow the description of her condition,
however, I am not using this forum to ask for a full diagnosis
although any opinions would appreciated.
