Competing for Neuronal Receptors in the RAS?

Could anyone explain why drugs (Anesthetics, Narcotics, Alcohol etc..) 
are able to produce unconscoiousness?  Do they compete for Receptors in 
Neurons of the Brains Reticular Activating system?  If so, what is their 
advantage over the body's own Neurotransmitters and what exactly are 
those transmitters consisting of?  I'm only a freshman at ENMU, but am 
very curious...
