It is unlikely that melatonin at a dose of 5 mg at bedtime will have any 
untoward side-effects. Melatonin has been been consistently reported to have 
a sedative effect in animals, including humans. It has been speculated that 
melatonin may be useful in the treatment of mood-disorders, but at present 
its use is restricted to the prophylactic treatment of jet-lag.
