I'm not sure if I followed Leslie Kay's post correctly, but I inferred
that the superficial 3 neocortical layers may have evolved differently
(before or after) from the deep 3 layers. If that were the case, it makes
me think of a probably-too-simplistic way of thinking about what became of
the layer I inputs in paleocortex:
If you add 3 evolutionally-newer cortical layers on top of the 3-layered
paleocortex, you get 6 layers--with the old layer I becoming the new layer
