Hi, My name is Jianguo Gu and I am anticipating on completing all
requirements for the Ph.D. degree in the Department of Pharmacology and
Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg,Canada by February
of 1994. I have been trained in the areas of cardiovascular pharmacology,
pharmacokinetics, neuropharmacology, neurochemistry, and neuroanatomy, with
an emphasis on techniques such as characterization of membrane transport
system for neurotransmitter release and uptake, determination of
intracellular Ca2+ mobilization, receptor binding assay, enzyme assay,
radioimmunoassay, cell culture, bioluminescence assay, HPLC, TLC, and
surgical procedures. I am actively seeking a postdoctoral training position
in research areas relating to purine and EAA actions in the CNS, mechanism
of neuronal degeneration, calcium homeostasis, or other areas relating to
my background. If you are interested in me please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely yours,

Jianguo Gu

V	Research Experience and Techniques

I have been trained in the areas of cardiovascular pharmacology,
pharmacokinetics, neuropharmacology, neurochemistry, and neuroanatomy,
with an emphasis on techniques such as characterization of membrane
transport system for neurotransmitter release and uptake, determination of
intracellular Ca2+ mobilization, receptor binding assay, enzyme assay,
radioimmunoassay, cell culture, bioluminescence assay, HPLC, TLC, and
surgical procedures.

1983 - 1984 I studied the effects of cardiovascular agents on the levels
of cAMP and prostaglandins in dog hearts and blood vessels.

1984 - 1987 I studied the mechanisms by which cardiac sudden death was
induced by abruptwithdrawal of propranolol. I determined the effects of
propranolol withdrawal on cardiac rhythm and on the levels of cAMP, CPK,
adenine nucleotides, and catecholamines in dog hearts with coronary artery
ligation. Furthermore, I measured the effects of propranolol on adrenergic
receptor density in rat and dog hearts.

1989 - present Following enrollment in the Ph.D. program in the Department
of Pharmacology	at the University of Manitoba I conducted 4 months of research
in the laboratory of Dr. R. Man as part of a Departmental course (students
must do two 4 month rotations in different laboratories). There I measured
phospholipids in heart tissues following ischemic insults.

My second rotation was with Dr. J.D. Geiger who is now my
supervisor. My projects here have been to determine the transport
characteristics of the metabolically stable enantiomeric probe L-adenosine,
to determine the extent to which metabolism of physiological D-adenosine
affects the kinetics of D-adenosine transport in rat brain and to determine
adenosine transport in postmortem human brain and cultured human fetal
brain cells.

My projects have also been extended to the determination of
endogenous diadenosine polyphosphates in rat brain by HPLC coupled with
bioluminescence assay, the role of diadenosine polyphosphates on
intracellular Ca2+ mobilization, on nitric oxide synthesis, and on cGMP
production induced by sodium nitroprusside.
