The PC-12 cell line was established by L. Greene and A. Tischler (PNAS vol.
73, p. 2424-2426, 1976) from a transplantable rat adrenal pheochomocytoma. 
Induction of a neuronal phenotype occurs using nerve growth factor (NGF). 
These cells have been extesively used in the study of cellular development
and regulation of gene expression.  If you have access to Medline, search
under the keyword "PC-12".  You ought to get hundreds of literature
references.
