"Brock Biology of Microorganisms" is the microbiology book that I have for general reference, and it is the one that I most commonly hear people recommend as a microbiology textbook. I believe that the most recent edition is Brock Biology of Microorganisms Edition 12 by Michael Madigan, John Martinko, and Paul Dunlap.
There also seems to be a free web version of the 8th edition of "Brock Biology of Microorganisms," but I have never used it myself, so I cannot vouch for it myself.
